P-8A Poseidon – Delivering the Maritime Patrol Aircraft

Synopsis
The UK has been left without an organic fixed wing Maritime Patrol Aircraft capability since the
withdrawal from RAF service of the Nimrod MR2 and the cancellation of the Nimrod MRA4 in 2010. This lecture will examine the justification for a Maritime Patrol Aircraft and the process that led to
the decision to procure the P-8A Poseidon aircraft at the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security
Review. This lecture will review the challenges of introducing the capability, including delivering the equipment, the approach to airworthiness and safety, the infrastructure, training and the potential wider benefits that come from such an investment. As the UK takes delivery of the first aircraft in
2019, the speaker will summarise the current programme status and preparedness for the
Introduction to Service of the capability  
Biography
Group Captain Simon Joy joined the Royal Air Force in 1996. Currently employed as the Type
Airworthiness Authority of the P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft within Defence Equipment and Support, his recent background includes commanding Forward Engineering Wing at RAF Brize
Norton where he was responsible for delivering air-to-air refueling and transport aircraft engineering. His career has seen him support numerous ISTAR platforms ranging from Canberra PR9 to
Sentinel R1.  

In his spare time he can be seen practicing for his Black Belt in Karate.
